PURAS OBTIENE EL SCRATCH E IGUALA EL MEJOR TIEMPO DE LA TRONA

Un total de 74 coches han tomado la salida en el XXXVII Rallye Catalunya-Costa Brava. Joost Boxoen (Subaru), Marta Candian (Mitsubishi) y German Anllo (Subaru) no han sido autorizados a correr porque la organización les sorprendió entrenando fuera de las fechas establecidas. Ettore Baita (Peugeot) y Francisco Roig (Mitsubishi) tampoco han tomado la salida porque no se presentaron a las verificaciones. Los aficionados han seguido las indicaciones dadas por la organización y no han accedido al tramo de la Trona, que había sido cerrado al público para minimizar las posibilidades de propagación de la fiebre aftosa. El campeón español, Jesús Puras (Citroën) ha marcado el scratch con un tiempo de 8:24.8 y ha igualado el mejor tiempo de este tramo, conseguido por François Delecour en 1991. El segundo puesto ha sido para Didier Auriol (Peugeot), con 8:25.8, seguido de Marcus Grönholm (Peugeot), con un tiempo de 8:26.0. Carlos Sainz (Ford), con algunos problemas de tracción delantera, no ha podido bajar de la docena posición, con un tiempo de 8:33.3. Colin McRae ha calado el coche al inicio del tramo y por este motivo ha perdido algunos segundos 8:35.8.

Didier Auriol (Peugeot): "Ya hemos solucionado los problemas que tuvimos en Portugal y he hecho este tramo a fondo."

Richard Burns (Subaru): "El tramo patinaba mucho. Puedo mejorar el tiempo."

Petter Solberg (Subaru): "Estoy contento de mi tiempo, teniendo en cuenta que es la primera vez que vengo a este rally."

Carlos Sainz (Ford): "El coche se me iba de la parte delantera."

Ettore Baita (Peugeot) i Francisco Roig (Mitsubishi) tampoc han pres la sortida perquè no es van presentar a les verificacions. Els aficionats han complert les indicacions donades per l'organització i no han accedit al tram de la Trona, que havia estat tallat al públic per minimitzar les possibilitats de propagació de la febre aftosa. El campió espanyol Jesús Puras (Citroën) ha marcat l'scratch amb un temps de 8:24.8 i ha igualat el millor registre d'aquest tram, aconseguit per François Delecour el 1991. El segon lloc ha estat per Didier Auriol (Peugeot), amb 8:25.8, seguit de Marcus Grönholm (Peugeot), amb un temps de 8:26.0. Carlos Sainz (Ford), amb alguns problemes de tracció davantera, no ha pogut passar del dotzè lloc, amb un temps de 8:33.3. Colin McRae ha calat el cotxe a l'inici del tram i per aquest motiu ha perdut alguns segons (8:35.8).
